New York To Launch Historic Energy Rebates
What is this new program?
“As part of President Biden’s Investing in America agenda, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) announced today that New York is the first state in the nation to launch their Home Energy Rebates program, created by the Inflation Reduction Act. New York’s program will allow more low-and-middle income families to take advantage of efficiency and clean energy upgrades that will make their homes more comfortable while saving money on their energy bills. New York’s launch is part of a larger nationwide initiative to provide $8.8 billion in Federal funding for states, territories, and Tribes to lower energy costs and increase efficiency in American homes by making it cheaper to install cost-saving measures such as heat pumps, electrical panels, and insulation.”
On May 30, 2024, New York Governor Kathy Hochul alongside Secretary of Energy, Jennifer Granholm, accompanied by Senior Advisor to the President for International Climate Policy, John Pedesta, arrived at Queens, NY to deliver a powerful speech about the Inflation Reduction Act. This program broadens New York State’s already existing EMPOWER+ Program and provides more support for lower and middle class families.
“The first phase of New York’s program will also support homeowners who wish to install air sealing, insulation, ventilation, heat pumps, heat pump water heaters, and electric upgrades (wiring and load service centers). The maximum rebate amount is $14,000 per housing unit.” This works with the EMPOWER+ Program for low-income households. Before these changes, the program mainly only allotted money towards air sealing and insulation. Now, with the additional funding available for each household, they can receive more than just insulation or air sealing work and the remaining funds can be put towards some of the other services highlighted above.
“New York is also working to stand up its Home Efficiency Rebates with $159 million funding from the President’s Inflation Reduction Act, which will provide eligible households up to $8,000 in additional rebates for measures that reduce energy usage by at least 20%.” This money will be available to more than just low-income households and will allow for middle class households to receive benefits that were not previously open to them!
